Preparation for GCSE English Language

Course Aims – What you will learn

This course is designed to prepare students for starting a GCSE English language course in September 2023. Students will develop the skills and knowledge needed to confidently undertake learning English to GCSE standard. You will be taught up to GCSE standards on a range of topics such as grammar, comprehension, and creative writing to ensure your confidence when undertaking the full GCSE course. Our intention with this course is to provide a safe, supportive environment for adult learners in our community to prepare themselves for study on a full GCSE course. We aim to provide a strong platform of knowledge to ensure the student’s best possible chance of achievement.

How you will be taught, and your understanding checked

Your tutor will work with you to understand your comfort level at the start of the course and helping agree a learning plan for you to get the most out of this course. In class, your lessons will be delivered through a mix of whole class teaching, small group activity and open discussions to encourage the sharing of ideas and communication: all supported by your tutor. Students will develop their confidence in reading and writing, improve their writing and grammar up towards GCSE standard. A major part of this course will be studying language devices for creative writing which your tutor will support you through. Your tutor will encourage you to develop your confidence and provide feedback to ensure you are getting the most from the course.

Progression – What you will be able to do next

Following the successful completion of this course, we intend for each student to be able to maintain their developed English skills and improved sense of self-confidence and wellbeing and carry these into a full GCSE English course. Alternatively, or perhaps simultaneously, students could also enrol onto our creative writing course where they will further develop their skills in writing for leisure and recreation as a means to improve their mental health and wellbeing.
