ESOL - Where I Live

This is an English language course for speakers of other languages (ESOL) and aims to improve confidence and development of functional language skills in talking about their home, the community where they live, and finding their way around.

Open to any learner from Pre-entry to Entry 3 level, learners will learn the vocabulary used to describe and talk about their home and the local area where they live. Learners will practise finding their way around the neighbourhood and how to ask for directions. Learners may also learn how to read a timetable.

As well as learning the core vocabulary and speaking reading, writing, and listening skills, by working independently and in small groups with your tutor, you will also develop wider skills such as:

● Problem solving

● Team working

● Communication skills

● Study skills

● Internet search/Google maps

How you will be taught, and your understanding checked:

Your tutor will work with you to understand what your level of knowledge is before you start to ensure that you are working at the right level for your needs. They will agree a learning plan for you to work towards. The course will be a mixture of whole class teaching, independent activity and small group/pair work, all supported by your tutor. Your tutor will talk to you about your progress, and you will give you feedback to help you to continue to develop your skills and knowledge.

On successful completion of the core modules, your tutor will talk to you about your progress and achievements. They will help you to decide what to do next, for example.

● Continue your studies in ESOL and complete a further module (up to 120GLH per year)

● continue your studies in ESOL and work towards a qualification.

● Start to learn another subject.

● Look for work or volunteering opportunities.

● Use your new skills in your everyday life.
