Course Aims – What you will learn?

As part of our approach to supporting learners to develop skills for life, our family history online course is designed to help you build digital skills. You will work individually, in small groups and with your tutor gaining new wider skills including:

In order to ensure you can develop your digital skills and research family history online you will be able to start from the beginning and will learn about:

  • Problem solving.
  • Team working.
  • Communication skills.
  • Study skills.

The classes will also introduce you to some of the skills needed to be able to create, save and update family tree documents.

  • Building a 5-generation family tree.
  • Your family history.
  • Using available resources online, hints and tips for using the main subscription websites.
  • Getting the most from birth, marriage and death records, censuses and military, immigration and employment records online.

How you will be taught, and your understanding checked?

Your tutor will work with you to understand what you know already and what you want to be able to do. They will agree a learning plan for you to work towards. The classes will be a mixture of whole class teaching, independent study activity and small group work, all supported by your tutor. Your tutor will talk to you about your progress and will give you feedback to help you continue to develop your confidence, skills and knowledge.

Progression – What you will be able to do next?

On successful competition of the core modules, your tutor will talk to you about your progress and achievements. They will help you to decide what to do next, for example:

  • Continue your studies.
  • Start to learn another subject.
  • Look for work or volunteering opportunities.
  • Use your new skills in everyday life.
